IJN Reconnaissance Aircraft Ki-15-I 'Babs' 'Tiger Troops'
The Type 97 Command Reconnaissance Aircraft was officially adopted in May 1937 for the purpose of strategic reconnaissance missions using high-speed aircraft, which had never been seen before. The 18th Independent Flying Squadron made use of the aircraft's high-speed performance in the skies over China, and was successful in gathering information for the Army's air and ground strategy planning. As a symbol of the reconnaissance unit's long-distance round-trip flights, a tiger unit mark based on a historical story was established in April 1939 and was also painted on the aircraft.
