The Macchi MB-326 was developed during the 1950s to equip the training departments of the Italian Air Force. The first examples of the new Macchi two-seat low-wing trainer were delivered in 1961, which immediately proved to be an excellent aircraft in terms of flight performance and operational characteristics. Easily recognizable by the two air intakes at the roots of the wings, it was equipped with the British Bristol Siddeley Viper jet engine. The MB-326 was destined for the Italian Air Force's advanced jet training program and performed this important role for several years before being replaced by the more modern MB-339. It also achieved good commercial success and was sold in more than 10 countries, becoming one of the most popular aircraft produced by the Italian aeronautical industry in the world. It could also be armed with two 12.7 mm machine guns and, in its underwing pylons, could carry an offensive load consisting of rockets and bombs.
