The Macchi MC 200, designed by the famous engineer Mario Castoldi, represented a significant evolution in the production of Italian fighter aircraft. Compared to the biplanes Fiat CR 32 and Fiat CR 42 which still constituted, at the beginning of the Second World War, the backbone of the Italian fighter units, the Macchi MC 200 was characterized, together with its contemporary Fiat G50, by a monoplane configuration and for the all-metal structure. The 14-cylinder Fiat A.74 RC 38 double star radial engine could deliver a power of 840 horsepower and make the Macchi Mc 200 reach 500 km/h. However, compared to the corresponding Allied fighters, the Macchi Mc 200 was not very powerful and, above all, not very well armed. The armament consisted of only two Breda-SAFAT machine guns 12.7 mm bolts mounted over the distinctive dimpled engine cowling. In the latest versions, two 7.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns were added in the wings. It was used by the Regia Aeronautica on the main fronts of the Second World War in Africa, on the Mediterranean, in the Balkans and in Russia.
