Yak-1 Soviet fighter on skis

The Yakovlev Yak-1 was one of the most produced Soviet fighters during World War II. Created in the early 1940s, it had numerous modifications, including a winter version with retractable landing gear fitted with skis. Since the design of such a landing gear showed many shortcomings in operation and maintenance, the command of the Air Force subsequently decided to equip the Yak-1 with special skis that separated from its landing gear during take off.
