VF-84, also known as the "Jolly Rogers," was a United States Navy fighter squadron that operated during various periods from 1955 to 1995. The squadron's official name was Fighter Squadron 84, and it was established in 1955. VF-84 became famous for its iconic "Jolly Rogers" insignia, which featured a skull and crossbones motif inspired by pirate imagery.

VF-84 was established as part of Carrier Air Group 8 (CVG-8). It initially flew the FJ-3 Fury before transitioning to the F-8 Crusader in 1958. VF-84 saw combat during the Vietnam War, operating from aircraft carriers in the Gulf of Tonkin. In 1967, VF-84 transitioned to the F-4 Phantom II, replacing its F-8 Crusaders. The squadron continued to operate the Phantom throughout the Vietnam War and beyond. Post the Vietnam War, VF-84 remained active, transitioning to the iconic F-14 Tomcat in early 1976. The Squadron participated in various deployments and exercises, was assigned to different aircraft carriers and air wings over the years.

The Jolly Rogers' legacy continues to be celebrated within naval aviation circles. Several other squadrons have adopted the Jolly Rogers name and insignia since VF-84's disestablishment, carrying on its traditions. Overall, VF-84, the Jolly Rogers, earned a reputation for excellence and valor throughout its history, leaving an indelible mark on naval aviation.
